Subject
Courtship
Description
This pamphlet is an interesting exploration and defense of bundling as a Yankee tradition (not just a Pennsylvania-Dutch one). Even without a bag or a board to physically separate a couple in bed, the reasoning went that all the bedclothes and the presence of a girl's family surrounding her ALL NIGHT would keep her chastity better than allowing the couple private time away from the house or God forbid in a car! Then there was the practical argument of having to keep the fire lit while a couple was courting whereas if you bundled you could talk for hours privately without wasting fuel. Some arguments against bundling are also submitted such as bundling being merely an attempt to offer one's daughters to whomever knocked at the candlelit window as well as it being too much of a direct temptation for any honest person. The short pamphlet concludes with two songs about bundling, one in favor and one against it. Overall, a very interesting courting method whose results can only be determined by the couple involved.
